Why Soapstone?

I was born in France, the middle of three children. My parents lived in Paris, but took advantage of every opportunity to get out into the country. As our parents were far from rich, we, the children, had to create our own games and toys. Our dolls were often made of clay, dried in the sun; we constructed little villages, and populated them with snails and other small creatures.

So from our earliest days we sculpted various materials and to this day, my sister and I still continue this art. As I mentioned above, clay was my first medium, but I quickly discovered that weeks of effort could be ruined in the blink of an eye in the kiln; sculpting in wood also left for me something to be desired.
Upon arriving in Manitoba in 1987, I wanted to try the soapstone used by the aboriginal artists: One stone later and I was hooked! For periods ranging from a few weeks to two months - the time required to complete a piece - dust reigns supreme around me. Little by little, a recognizable shape emerges and then the finer work, including detailing, sanding and oiling takes place. Finally, the true colour of the stone shines through. The result is simply magic!!! All that is left is for me to “massage” the sculpture to produce the final luster: This is one of my favorite activities. Women “Au Naturel” captures women in some of their natural day-to-day positions.

In 2006, we decided to move back to France where I decided to become a full time sculptor. During nice weather, I work outside in the courtyard where everybody is welcome to try out or just look or feel. During winter the basement is my workshop.
